Plots

Draw around your farm or a field and the model is cut to that outline. Click a plot to show its handles: drag a square to move a corner, or a round handle to add one. Press Delete plot in its menu (or the Delete key) to remove it.

Use a Land Registry boundary draws your plot from the legal boundary of your land (England and Wales). Download your council's free INSPIRE Index Polygons file once, add it here, then click inside your land on the map. Click more titles to add them as extra plots.

Map features

Mark things on the map to build them into the model. Buildings, fields, woodland, ponds and yards are closed outlines. Ponds, lakes and yards are levelled and cut slightly into the surface. A field shows its area in the middle, and prints it as raised lettering on the model. Hedges, fences, walls, streams, rivers, roads and tracks are open lines. Trees are single clicks. A landmark is a single click on a church, castle, windmill, tor, standing stone or similar: the site looks up its shape, height and description and builds a model of it. Click a finished one to edit its points, and press Delete to remove it.

QuickMost accurate

Fences don't show up on maps or in the lidar, so Auto-plot can't find them. Mark your fences before adding field sizes, or fields split by a fence are sized as one.

Auto-plot fills in your land in one go. The further right the slider, the more sources it uses and the more accurate the model: OpenStreetMap, then roofs read from the aerial photo, then buildings, trees, woods and hedges found in the lidar, and finally every shape's height, roof and position corrected from the lidar. For the lidar steps, the Environment Agency's 1 m lidar for your plot is fetched automatically (England only), unless you have added lidar files of your own. One Undo takes back the whole run. Add field sizes is separate: it puts a size in every field your hedges, fences and walls close in, whenever you like, without running Auto-plot again.

One step at a time

Roofs from the photo looks at each building's roof in the aerial photo and gives it the matching material (slate, clay tiles, corrugated steel or thatch) in the colour the photo shows.

Finds each field that your hedges, fences, walls, tracks, streams and the plot edge close in, ignoring small gaps such as gateways, and puts its size on it.

Finds the hedges, fences, walls, woods, trees, water, tracks and buildings that volunteers have already mapped on your plot, so you only need to add what is missing. It never adds field sizes. You choose what to keep.

Tidy hedges and buildings averages out the zig-zags in hedges found in the lidar or drawn with many points, so each one runs as a clean line, and gives ragged buildings square corners (a rectangle, or an L or T made of rectangles). Hedges drawn with a few points and buildings that are already square are left as they are. Undo takes it back.

Needs the Environment Agency's surface model (DSM) as well as its ground model (DTM), added under Lidar files. The difference between them is the height of everything standing on the ground, so buildings (with their eaves height and roof shape), single trees, woods and hedges can be found, or the heights of the ones you have marked checked.

Get recent aerial photos of your land free from the Environment Agency: environment.data.gov.uk/survey. Pick your area, download the aerial photography as GeoTIFF files, then add them here. They already know where they belong on the map. Once added, an Aerial button appears beside Map and Satellite, and the photo goes onto the 3D model.

Open the survey site

Your own picture (a drone or aerial photo as JPG or PNG, or a screenshot you are allowed to use). A picture does not know where it is, so after adding it you line it up yourself: drag the two corner dots and the middle dot until it sits on the satellite picture underneath. It keeps its shape, so you only need to match two places. The satellite shows through when you slide the see-through control.

Opens a search in a new tab for the middle of the map. The pictures stay on those sites, so check each picture's licence before you use it.

Image helper

Add a photo of a building, wall, roof, hedge or other feature. The helper looks at it on your own computer (the photo is not uploaded), suggests the material and colour, and fits it to the buildings or shapes you pick. The first time, it downloads a picture-recognition model of roughly 150 MB, which your browser then keeps. Only use photos you are allowed to use.

Lidar files (optional)

Get lidar for my plot fetches the Environment Agency's 1 m lidar for England (the ground model, DTM, and the surface model with roofs and treetops, DSM) for exactly your plot, free, with nothing to download yourself. Or add GeoTIFF elevation files of your own. They replace the global terrain wherever they cover the frame. Use a DTM (bare ground) while Buildings is on.

Coloured sidesShows the sides of hedges, fences, walls and buildings in the colour picked in their menu, in the preview, the coloured OBJ and the 3D viewer. The STL stays one colour. Also save every building as its own OBJOne extra file per building, with its walls, roof and materials, to texture one at a time in programs such as StableProjectorz. The main OBJ is unchanged.

The 3D viewer is one web page you can keep, email or open without internet, to turn the model around on screen. It carries every picture layer and has a screensaver button. The coloured OBJ comes with the picture, for full-colour printers and 3D software. See it on your table opens the model on a phone or tablet's camera, standing on your table at the size it will print. Draw a plot to see the image on the model.

Hidden joints between piecesWhen the model is split, cuts a bow-tie slot across each join on the back. The keys come with the STL download as an extra file. Print them and press them in. Nothing shows from the front. Needs a base of 3 mm or more. Slot in the back for the standCuts a small pocket in the back of the STL and OBJ so the model clips onto the stand. Split models get a pocket in each piece, either side of the middle.
